So what is it about?

You may be wondering what The Highlander's Experience is all about. The business was set up in February 1999 with the aim of bringing entertaining and educational presentations to a wide audience. These presentations evolved out of two of my life-time interests: Local Scottish History and International Space Exploration.

About me

My name is Ray Owens. I was born in Inverness, the capital of the Scottish Highlands, and I have lived all of my life here. I currently live in Culloden, on the outskirts of Inverness, and within two miles of the site of the last battle fought on British soil.

You may think that Owens is not a particularly Scottish surname. My father, Joseph William Gladstone Owens, was Welsh, and he met my mother while she was stationed in Wales during WWII. My mother, Jane MacKenzie Grant, was born in Inverness, and her family have lived here for generations.

About my business

I established the business in February 1999, and gave my first performance on 18th of March 1999, at Duncan Forbes Primary School, and my first hotel performance on 24th April 1999, at Culloden House Hotel. Since then, the business has grown by leaps and bounds, and I have travelled throughout Scotland and to New York, performing The Highlander's Experience at many hotels, castles, schools, and other venues. I now give regular performances at many locations throughout Scotland.

Dressed in the traditional costume of the time, and carrying authentic weapons and equipment, the Highlander tells tales from Scottish history, allowing the audience to get a true sense of the past, and to learn how life in the Highlands has changed in the last 250 years.
